The Moon – New Moon and Full Moon rituals

The Moon it’s the Earth’s satellite that orbits around the planet and the zodiac in approximately 28 days. Because of the Moon’s close distance to the Earth, we can strongly feel its influence. Just to name the flux and reflux phenomena that are caused by the Moon, or how it emotionally affects people during its cycle.

From astrological point of view, the Moon has different meanings depending on the case or interpretation: women, the mother, the night, receptivity, going back to the past, emotions, memories, collective subconscious, maternity, large group of people, family, instinct, what one calls home.

It governs the Cancer sign, Monday, the IV house of the zodiac, silver or silver color. The phases of the Moon that are the most symbolic and meaningful in astrology and for ritual or ceremonial works are the New Moon and Full Moon. The Moon similar to the Earth has a one side illuminated by the Sun and the phases are formed depending on the side that is illuminated and seen from the Earth.

The New Moon in formed when the disk of the Moon cannot be seen from the Earth due to the Moon and the Sun having the same orbital longitude (i.e Sun conjuncts Moon) whereas the Full Moon is formed when the Earth is between the Sun and Moon, thus the side of the Moon is completely illuminated and we can see it as a round disk (i.e. Sun opposites Moon).

The New Moon Phase is the sign of new beginnings where we plant a seed whether we are literally planting seeds in the earth to grow or we are starting new projects in our lives. By using this window in time, we are choosing the most auspicious period to begin and develop our plans. It’s a great time to clean or decorate ones home to get rid of some vices we still hang on too: alcohol, smoking, drugs, etc. It’s not recommended to start a detox or diet to lose weight or to plan for a medical surgery.

The Full Moon Phase shows the fruits of the seeds we have planned in the first stage of the Moon and or the possible things we need to get rid of or change in the process. At this time, we are full or energy and creativity but at the same time very emotional; we can have all sort of frustrations, we can be more fearful or aggressive, various emotions emerging to the surface in order to make them conscious. Same as for the New Moon, it’s not recommended to plan a surgery during this period.

A ritual is a ceremonial act that consists in a series of actions performed in a customary way. People that are doing spiritual work are using rituals as a tool to reconnect with the spirit or the unseen world and to get messages for guidance and self-development.

Performing a New Moon or Full Moon ritual

Choose a place
The best way is to do the ceremony in nature however if this is not possible, choose an indoor place where you’ll not be disturbed

Smudging and cleaning
Prepare the place by smudging with sage or Palo Santo wood for cleaning the room from unwanted energies

Set up an altar
Create a personalized altar of your chose using a cloth where you can put personal objects that are dear to you (photo of a loved one, a saint, etc), favorite crystal, oracle or tarot cards, essential oils, incense etc.

Open a sacred space
Invoke and call the directions (South, West, North, East, etc) in order to create a sacred space when you feel secure and ready to open yourself to the messages of the moon energies

Light up candles
Once the sacred space is created, light up the candles – the fire of the candle it’s symbolic and represents the Spirit

Put some music
Create a relaxing atmosphere by playing a smooth and calming music in the background

Mediate or pray
Stay in a meditative position for as long as you can try to connect with your breath and focusing on the heart center. You can say a prayer to feel more connected into the heart chakra.

Set up the intention (think in 2 weeks, 6 months period).

Once your mind is clearer and you feel more centered if you don’t know already the intention/s you wish to plant, to release or call upon, ask the question and be ready to hear an internal answer that will guide you to the right intention. Then, write it on a piece of paper.

Release the intention
The human mind can grow attachments to an idea, intention or plan so the recommendation is to detach from the outcome of how that intention/plan will manifest. Thus, you can choose to let go of the intention by burning the paper in the candle, put on water or plant in the earth or throw into the wind. This can be done in the same day or the next day following the ritual.

Close the circle
At the end when the intention for the new/full moon energies are set, you may choose to pull up an oracle card that will send a message of what will your best actions or state of mind be for this moon cycle

Once you connect and make the moon ritual a habit of your spiritual work and self-growth, you will become more aware of the benefit it has in your life, the way it help you build the intentions and plans of life you wish to manifest in the world.

Happy Moon!
